What Does Goddess See in Jesus?
Abundance and Goodness are surely attributes of the Goddess that attract us to Her in all Her forms. I love the picture of Rhiannon the Celtic Great Goddess Queen riding her "unearthly" white horse through the land which is rich with growing, reminding folk of Her fruitful abundance. Seeing the white horse in processions and parades is still a remnant, a reminder of Her bountiful earth and Her care for us.
No wonder women drifted away from Christianity, how can it compete with the billowing colors of Goddess as May Day? When we claim Mary Magdalene as Bride, we reclaim the colors of Goddess.
May Day with its "anointing rituals", its Sacred Marriage rituals of mating and "the new" which comes from Union. "The new" is not just a new child born of sacred union, it can also be a new realization, a new attitude, a new capability, a new level of consciousness, or even a New Age or a New Creation. It's metaphor is sometimes called "Light" and it is born of the union of the feminine and the masculine energies of God.
Sacred Union is the provenance of Goddess' expression of the goodness of life, the essential goodness of our own loving potential for creation of a better world together.
An anointing ritual expresses these archetypal themes and their wisdom. Perhaps it is the centerpiece of the Gospel, the part of his story which Jesus was very insistent on "getting it right". Don't bother her,he said, she will use this oil to anoint me at my burial and you will do this in memory of her. We might easily say that Jesus and Mary Magdalene's intentional creation of an anointing ritual, a sacred marriage, was their expression in their time of Goddess' timeless wisdom of the goodness of life.
He was in favor of the goodness of everyday life on earth, not the merchandising and exploitation of life. He was in harmony with the goodness in life, surely an attribute of the Goddess. He named the problem as those who refuse to realize goodness (Goddess) in John 3:20 when he said, "For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." To say "hates the light" is to say "hates the new which is born of the union of heaven and earth".
In Jesus, Goddess must have seen a willing partner to honor Her values and Her "ways of all women", a loving representative of all that is sacred in the positive masculine face of God. I think he is waiting for us to restore his Bride, his Magdalene, so we can go forward together again.

Thanks, Karen, I was just listening to your wonderful interview with our "foremother" Barbara Walker, on your podcast archives when I got this message. I hope my readers will tune in to your fantasticly rich interviews with the leaders of the Women's Spirituality community. They can be accessed at www.KarenTate.com . I also enjoyed listening to Jean Shinoda Bolen and of course, Margaret Starbird.
Barbara gave this quote from Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a foremother of our country's creation, "Women will not be entirely free until they are free of the masculine god."

Joan,
Just got to your recent blog entry and really liked the equation of Goddess with Goodness, which is the way I see the Magdalene, full of heart and love and goodness.
I especially enjoyed the following portion of your posting: "He named the problem as those who refuse to realize goodness (Goddess) in John 3:20 when he said, "For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." To say "hates the light" is to say "hates the new which is born of the union of heaven and earth". "
I think that the full experience of Goodness and of Union show us the light that is already present in us, although it is sometimes hidden by our fears or our challenges. Thanks for the biblical reference, which brings a really interesting and truthful perspective to this line of thought.

I enjoy reading your blogs concerning Magdalene. Its fascinating to note how chaotic this world seems to be getting and how the goddess has been popping up the last few years..maybe just maybe the goddess and the god have come to earth to save there people. To me the signs are out there and around everyone...you just have to look....

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for your comment, you are so right in intuiting the balancing, centering, healing effect that the Sacred Union of god and goddess is having on our world and will have more and more as we go further along into (what some call) the New Creation. All the imagery of Sacred Union is about balance in love. Margaret Starbird recently said that the Sacred Complement paradigm has "healing in its wings", uniting heaven and earth, flesh and divinity . We're all longing for this healing, aren't we? Thanks again for writing. Joan
