When I was inspired to start giving Magdalene Circles to reconnect women with the lost feminine in christianity through the stories of Mary Magdalene and Sacred Union, I felt supported by Jean Shinoda Bolen's book The Millionth Circle. I was delighted to see that she's a contributor to Women of Wisdom where she says this about the power of women gathered together, "The resultant circle with a sacred center becomes the vessel of transformation for individuals and culture." I developed my Magdalene Circles from Jean's concept of the much-needed transformation of the culture. We bring the sacred feminine into our world through circles because they are not hierarchial, all people are equal in circles. The sacred center of our circles is to bring back the stories of Mary Magdalene, the sacred feminine in original christianity. It was the research and writings of Margaret Starbird which inspired the resurgence of Sacred Union and the "partnership paradigm" in christian spirituality. When I read Jean Bolen's Goddesses in Everywoman long ago I wouldn't have dreamed that we'd find one in the Western world's major religion, but that's what Magdalene is. Her stories are the stories of the heart, of feminine relatedness, of the principle of Eros in union. Mary Magdalene is the archetypal "Everywoman" as we journey through a life of the heart.
I love it that Women of Wisdom is so well illustrated. I think we are all (blessedly) becoming more right brained and we like books that are a nice balance between words and pictures. There are beautiful paintings of women on just about every page, with lovely little spot illustrations and page borders throughout. It's a feast for the eye as well as the heart and mind.

One more quote from Jean Shinoda Bolen's chapter in the book.. " Activism and circles with a spiritual center now can and do come together. They can tap into invisible support generated in silence, meditation, prayer, or ritual-all of which is centering. Talk may occupy most of the time together, as in any meeting, and yet when it is a circle with a sacred center, the energy feels different. Energy is generated and women are nourished and feel better for having attended." For my Magdalene Circles and our book, I wrote and recorded Magdalene meditations to help create the sacred center to the circle. I hope others will use them for their circles. The "give-away" I've offered for the Women of Wisdom book campaign is a download PDF of a meditation called "Remembering Ourselves in Her, A Journey To the Mary Magdalene Within." I hope you use it for your own Magdalene Circle. It is through individual women that the Magdalene comes alive again.
The energy feels different when a circle has a spiritual center. That's a mystery you can only discover by trying it with some friends. Jean spoke at the Northwest Catholic Women's Convocation in May and I was so pleased to give her a copy of 14 Steps To Awaken the Sacred Feminine: Women in the Circle of Mary Magdalene and thank her for being such an inspiration to me. In her lecture she described herself as an "Episco-pagan". That's the new Sacred Union in christianity.
You can tell I love Jean Bolen's work but there are many, many other fabulous women in this book. Here's the Table of Contents where you can see for yourself what a high quality of thinking and feeling and writing are in Women of Wisdom.
