Mary Magdalene and 2012

Maybe it was somehow purposeful that I couldn't write last weekend and that this blog goes out today, September 9, 2009. 9-9-09.  It's an auspicious day, a potent day in the flow of days and weeks until we arrive at "the 2012".  The year 2012 has come to symbolize a shift in consciousness more than a day when something big will happen. It's a kind of benchmark  for recognition that our conscious awareness of our spirital selves is expanding rapidly to include "the MORE" of us; our soul dimensions and beyond.  You wouldn't think that something as simple as a woman's life story could be included in this lofty concept, but it is, and perhaps it even represents the most essential aspect of "the shift".  I'm talking about Mary Magdalene and her Sacred Union with Jesus, of course. She symbolizes the body and the intense value of the earthly heart as a guide for building a better life and a better Earth.

She represents the idea that we should live our lives in communication and union with the sacred world, not in a hierarchial enslavement to spiritual values as more important than physical values.  "On Earth and in Heaven", with the heart's values as with the head's values.
We've experimented with the "lone god" concept and discovered that the head without a heart will burn up and kill the planet and enslave the women. And enslave the men into mindless consummerism and a debt-based financial system. Things don't work well unless we hold in prominence the values of motherhood; nurturing, caretaking, feeding, clothing, cooperating, creating, and growing together. Jean Shinoda Bolen tells us this strongly in Urgent Message from Mother . We need to value women and especially mothers if we want to save ourselves and "shift" into the New Creation.

That's why I love Mary Magdalene and her Sacred Union. Her husband wasn't a warmonger. His strong display of physicl force was to disprupt the commerce of religion, to say it is a lie that we have to buy favor with God. We're already loved and loving each other is the way forward. Don't be enslaved by the values of commerce as if it's a religion. (I know there are many other interpretations of that piece of story but this is mine for today)
You can't even begin to value the physical world enough to stop its destruction and begin it's improvement unless the body and heart are "in the story". So it's perfect that Mary Magdalene is claiming her role as Sacred Feminine Holy Grail right now as we shift into the new Aquarian Age and begin to pull back from the depleted patriarchy, in creation of a balanced partnership paradigm.  She is full of life and is life-creating and in her partnership with Jesus she symbolizes the principle of cyclic renewal, that all life is sustainable and renewable if we live it in a head & heart balance. Heaven and Earth.

    Hi Joan,

Thank you so much for this deep explanation of Mary Magdalene's role and meaning in Sacred Union mythos. In terms of peace and happiness and healing the wastelands, the power of the heart has an enormous role as a guiding force (considering the current state of things as you describe).

I think that for all of the complex studies of the Grail-Magdalene, academic or otherwise, it's the Grail's message of love and kindness that means the most to me. The practical application of heartfelt caring (to every problem), will always feel to me as the foremost element of Her powerful and beautiful Mystery.

    Love, Jen

      Hi Jen,
What a beautiful way you have with words. You make this blog, this "Magdalene community newspaper" so much fuller with your comments. I like what you said about the academic studies of  Jesus and Magdalene easily becoming over-wrought and the central core meaning and feeling becoming lost.  Personally, there was a point where I grew completely tired of "debate" about these things and I just wanted to express myself about the meaning of Sacred Union between all things.  I know you feel this urge as a creative person.  Thanks so much for sharing your artistic ways with paint and words with everyone.  Keep it flowing. xoJoan

I just ran across this: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/remains-of-jesusera-synagogue-found-in-israel-20090911-fkvq.html

"The remains of a 2,000-year-old synagogue where Jesus may have preached were found on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, archaeologists said on Friday.

The synagogue, one of the oldest ever found, was unearthed at Migdal, which Christians believe to be the birthplace of Mary Magdalene, a leading follower of Jesus."

      Hi Ariadne (love your name!),
Thanks for sharing this news story. It's amazing how entrenched the story is that Mary Magdalene is "Mary of Magdala", or Migdal.  There are many reasons we believe it isn't true, one is that when she was alive Magdala was called Taricheae. Also, women in the group surrounding Jesus weren't referred to by their placenames.  If her name didn't derive from her supposed hometown, what did it come from?  The Aramatic word and  title "Magdala" means literally tower or citadel and it means strength and power. Kind of like saying "the Great One". She was called Mary THE Magdalene, an honorific title which indicates her stature as sacred partner to the one who was called Messiah. People at that time looked for a queen to go with the king, always. They were looking for his wife, his sacred complement.  Mary  THE Magdalene was listed as "number one woman" in 7 of the 8  Gospel lists of women in Jesus' group. First Lady, so to speak.
I hope you'll read more deeply about this in Margaret Starbird's Mary Magdalene: Bride in Exile , because she's the definitive authority on this subject (in my opinion) and her research and theological thought processes are very, very interesting.  Margaret has many new essays on her website. Click here.
Loosening up the identification of Mary Magdalene with the then non-existent town of Magdala is one of the biggest jobs we're doing these days as we work to claim the Sacred Complement in the Sacred Marriage paradigm of christianity. One of the ways to demote her and reduce her importance in the story is say she was from this "out of town " place, not close to where the central story with Jesus was happening.
Some of the spiritual story assumptions that are made  in the name of archaeology these days are unfortunate. I understand that archaeological digs are also sometimes used to displace indigenous people, so they've become somewhat suspect to me.  It's almost like the old relics trade in the Middle Ages. A grain of salty wisdom is sometimes needed.
Thanks again for thinking of us and giving us the link to the story. It's always interesting when it has to do with "our Mary, the Magdalene".
      xoJoan
